The dehumanising power of the euphemism

Under: Language | News

Steven Neary is 23 and is autistic. He is cared for by his father Mark. They became a news item two years ago when Steven was taken into care against his own wishes and those of his father, and it was only after a court case that he was allowed home.

Mark Neary blogs – much more regularly than I’ve been doing of late. Anyway, his post this week is well worth reading. He talks of the words behind which social services teams hide – words that either objectify his son or make his behaviour sound far worse than it is. You can read it here.
